Year 2 at the Boatshow

Year 2 had a wonderful trip to the PSP Southampton Boatshow. They were amazed by the Sunseekers and enjoyed relaxing on the sun decks. The canoeing challenge was hard work but the children had fun racing one another. Year 2 were a credit to the school and behaved so well. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them at the show.

Bike It at Bitterne Manor!

Yesterday at Bitterne Manor was BIKE IT day! We were extremely pleased to see how many of our parents and pupils had brought in their bikes and scooters to school - around half the school took up the offer of a free bike & scooter check! So overwhelming was the response that the Bike Doctor team will be returning soon to catch up on all those that didn't get checked - please check our notice boards if your bike missed out. Matt Porter of 'Sustrans' led an assembly for all pupils about Being Bright and Being Seen when they're out on their bikes and reminded them about how to be sensible and polite to pedestrians when riding on the pavement. Pupils were also invited to take part in the 'BE A TWO-ZERO HERO' competition - more details can be found at www.sustrans.org.uk/twozerohero.

Welcome back to year 5.

As we are now in our third week back at school, the year fives are truly into the swing of things. The new topic of Rock 'n' Roll has seen children show a great amount of enthusiasm, listening to music from the 1950s up to the present day, and now coming up with dance routines for an upcoming performance. In literacy we have been studying traditional tales, identifying typical features and writing a news report for Beauty and the Beast's wedding. The children now look to write their own traditional tale, using their imagination, whilst adhering to the style and structure of other traditional tales. With a planned science experiement coming up tomorrow, I look forward to keeping you updated on their progress.

We are very pleased to welcome Year R to Bitterne Manor!

We have enjoyed welcoming the Year R children to school life! They have explored the school and the classroom and have taken part in many activities including PE, number work, reading, painting, making and sticking, computers, puzzles, bikes and many more! Please see the pictures below. Well done Year R for a great start to school!

Milford-on-Sea

Year 6 enjoyed a trip to Milford-on-Sea to study the coastal environment. They saw first hand how coastal defences were being used to protect the land and how people use the area. Of course there was also time for an ice-cream!

Year 4 explore Clausentum

It was great to welcome some parents as we were led round Roman Southampton (Clausentum) by local archaeologist Dr Russel. The school site is built along the outside of the rampart wall of the Roman town. History was brought alive as we were shown the sites of artefacts during excavations, for example a bag of Roman coins and even the skeleton of a Roman woman!

What a brilliant way to begin our Roman topic work this term. The class will be following up this trip with a visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace shortly. Can't wait! Thanks to the parents who came along too.

Push and pull!

This week, year 1 are learning about push and pull forces in science. Today we were experimenting with different equipment that used the push or pull force! We learnt that wind can push a weather vane, that water can push a water wheel and that magnets can both push and pull!

Year 1 visit Blue Reef!

Last week, year 1 visited Blue Reef aquarium in Portsmouth. We particularly enjoyed looking at the seahorses and the sting rays! There were lots of interesting creatures and we even got the chance to stroke a spider crab and a star fish! We were all very brave! In the afternoon, we learnt how to do rubbings. Some of them are up on display outside our classroom!

The Green Ship!

Year 3 have been studying The Green Ship by Quentin Blake. We have written descriptive pieces of writing using exciting adjectives and even created our own Green Ships! Please come in and see our Green Ship display board.

Science - Grouping rocks!

Year 3 have been out and about around the school grounds collecting rocks and sorting them into different groups.

Year 6 and their terrific tiles!

Year 6  designed tiles based on a sea theme as part of their 'Coasts' topic. Working in pairs, they made their tiles in clay and used joining techniques to make them 3D (this was very tricky!). The tiles were then decorated. The end results look fantastic and are displayed outside the classroom!
