Children's Mental Health week 5th -11th February 2024- Todays theme: Managing Panic

Panic attacks are something that most people may experience at least once in their lifetime. A panic attack is an exaggerated experience of anxiety, and a heightened physical response to an anxiety-provoking situation. When a person is having a panic attack they often experience a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, and nausea. People often think that they are losing control, they are going to faint, or that they are having a heart attack.

MYTH BUSTER: People often feel dizzy or faint when they experience a panic attack which leads them to thinking they will faint. However due to a person’s increased blood pressure during a panic attack, fainting is not physically possible.

When a person is having a panic attack, it can feel very scary for them, so it is important for someone to remain with them and to remind them that they are safe. There are some things that you can do with young people to help them feel better in the moment, such as controlled breathing exercises and grounding techniques. This blog post from Young Minds details ways to manage a panic attack, before, during, and after: Young Minds - Tips for managing panic attacks.

Children's Mental Health Week 5th -11th February 2024- Todays theme: Low mood

Low Mood is highly prevalent in our population, in fact most people experience low mood from time to time. It can be described as; feelings of sadness, tiredness, irritation, low motivation or changes to our physiology. Low mood can often be triggered by something challenging happening in our lives. For young people, this might be friendship difficulties, changes at home, school exams.

We know that one way of improving low mood is to feel listened to and heard by trusted individuals. This might be a friend, family member or a professional such as a teacher or counsellor. Finding time for young people to think about what matters to them can be a protective exercise to help young people to feel empowered to improve their mood. A detailed resource pack can be found on the Places2be’s Children’s Mental Health Week website including Assembly slides, Primary aged worksheets and packs and secondary & College worksheets.

The MHST also continue to offer face to face and online workshops:

• 6 ways to wellbeing for young person
• Improving low mood for young people
• Supporting a child with low mood for parents & carers
• Supporting a child In school who is experiencing Low Mood for Education Staff

Additionally, we have an online learning platform called SilverCloud that young people can access to learn more about low mood and how to manage it. SilverCloud access is gained through individual consultation and referral to the MHST.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Abbott who can put you in touch with our link EMHP if you would like to learn more about low mood, or book in any of the above workshops.

Children's Mental Health Week 5th -11th February 2024. Todays theme- Positive self talk

Todays theme is ‘positive self-self talk’.

Self talk is how we talk to and about ourselves. This might be out load to ourselves or others, it can also be the way we think about ourselves.

For children and young people who experience lots of self-talk that is negative their confidence and self esteem is likely to be impacted.

Encouraging positive self-talk can help improve self esteem and confidence.
