Hands on - it's Science Day!

What an exciting day to end the half term! Each class moved round their keystage investigating a range of different questions from Do bigger bubbles fall faster than smaller ones? to How high will my rocket fly? to Is it a liquid or is it a solid? plus many more.

The children worked well in teams, using their scientific knowledge to work out the answers and conduct their testing. Very impressive work everyone :) We finished the day by sharing our findings in an assembly.

Tuesday gardening club

What an exciting lunchtime it was this Tuesday, the first day of the weekly gardening club. Supported by 2 able parents, hoards of children tackled the weeds in the KS1 patio gardens, began weeding Year 4 patio garden, planted out bedding plants, watered ... the list of jobs goes on! A BIG well done to you all.

Year 3s small holding visit

Year 3 enjoyed their visit to a small holding near Romsey. Our trip was inspired by the animals in our Power of Reading book, Charlotte's Web by E B White (except that the pig's name was Peppa, not Wilbur!)

We interviewed Debbie, the owner, to find out more about the site and caring for the animals and were able to use our mapping skills too whilst there.

Most of us held one of the chicks which were 5 weeks old. They felt warm and peep-peeped a lot!

Year R visited Hawthorns Wildlife Centre

On Friday Year R visited Hawthorns at Southampton Common.

We took part in a variety of activities including taking on the role of squirrels and hiding 'nuts', acting as birds looking for different coloured caterpillars, mini-beast hunting, finding brass rubbings and using the activity rooms.

We had a fantastic time. Year R were very well behaved. Well done Year R. Thank you to those parents who came and helped us.

Year 5 Film Narratives

This half term we have been studying film in literacy. We have focused on the film clip 'The Piano'. As the finale of our project we created our own film narratives, which we then added to 'The Piano' in Windows Movie Maker. We had lots of fun doing this, and evaluated our end results whilst eating popcorn! Perhaps you would like to evaluate some of our narratives too?

Space boxes

Last week, year 5 became creative, making moving space boxes using cam mechanisms. In the video you can see an explanation of how the space boxes were made, and how they work.

Voucher Counting!

Here are some Year 5 pupils giving up their time at lunch to count the thousands of vouchers we have pouring in from Tesco and Sainsburys! Thanks to everyone who has collected for us - please keep bringing them in!

Year 6 SATs

Well done to Year 6 who took their SATs tests this week. Everyone worked extremely hard and did their very best. We are very proud of you all!

Year 6 artists

Year 6 have been learning about Cubsim and studying the work of Cubist artitsts, such as Picasso. They have created their own pieces in this style, using observational drawings as a starting point. The children have also been looking at the work of Andy Warhol and have made Pop Art style images of their own faces!

As part of our 'Bugs' topic Year R have been on a mini-beast hunt! We are going to use the information we gathered from this to form tally charts and bar graphs.

Year R have been thinking about the story of the Hungry Caterpillar. After reading the story they then role-played it before writing their own version. Their writing was amazing, well done Year R!

Greenfingers at Fairweather's

Year 3 have earnt their green fingers whilst working in the learning garden at Fairweather's in Beaulieu.

We saw composting in action then learnt about looking after plants with our hands on activities - from weeding, watering and preparing planting beds to transplanting flowers, planting potatoes and potting up tomatoes, for example. We even tried a few fresh radishes!

We'd all worked up an appetite for our picnic in the New Forest en route back to school. Now we can use our new skills whilst growing things at school!

Interclass potato competition!

Every class is competing to see who can grow the highest yield (most weight) of potatoes by the beginning of July! The children in each class have planted 3 seed potatoes and it is up to them to care for their potatoes well.

Will your class have the highest yield?

Good luck everyone!
