Maths problem solving for Kestrels

Today we eased ourselves back into maths with a little practical problem solving.  It really got our brains thinking and reminded us of some of our number facts: multiples, factors and square numbers.  The children showed great resilience as well as logic and collaboration.  A super way to recap some of our school learning behaviours.  Well done Kestrels!

Motivated kestrels

A few more samples of work from kestrels group B, who produced more excellent work at the end of last week.  The quality of the work is superb and I can't wait to see what they will produce later this week!

Pride in Home Learning

Well done to this amazing kestrel who has brought into school some of the fantastic home learning he has done during lockdown.  The pride he has taken in his presentation is outstanding!  I have chosen just a couple of pages to share, but his whole book was the same!  Fabulous!

Prison Cell Conundrum

Kestrels Group B did a fantastic job in maths yesterday of unraveling the prison cell conundrum and working out which prisoners would be set free!  It was a challenge, but they were very resilient and we solved it in the end!!

Kestrels are working super hard!

A huge well done to the kestrels in Group B who have worked super hard today!  They have produced some fabulous ideas in English; thought logically in maths and put heaps of pride into their continent fact files for Geography as well as finishing off their brilliantly colourful lock down montages!  Wow - what a day!

SWIFTS are SMART!

Today, the SUPER Swift class took part in the 'Smarties challenge!'  This required them to use their Maths skills that they have learnt this week! They have been looking at 'Statistics' and learning all about tally charts and block graphs.  It was a great way to consolidate their understanding and see how well they could apply their knowledge. If they did a great job with the challenge, they got the chance to EAT their Smarties.  I've never seen them so focused!

Take a look at what they got up to...

Times Table Trophies!

Swifts, Skylarks, Nightingales and Rooks are rising to the challenge of collecting their Times Table Trophies!

Across the classes children are challenging themselves to focus on their times tables. It's fantastic to see such enthusiasm from the children towards progressing through the trophies! They will be frequently practicing their tables in class before completing a times table sheet.

Children are delighted when they complete a times table to get a gold star on their Times Table Trophy card and a certificate to take home!

SUPER Swifts LOVE measuring!

This week, Swifts have been learning about measures, length in particular! We started off the week by estimating length using non-standard resources (Multi-link and paperclips) Miss Sangha posed us with an investigation where we had to estimate how many cubes and paperclips the length of a foot was.  Once we made a sensible guess, we measured the length using the resources.  It was very interesting and a lot of our guesses were correct! This then allowed us to move onto using a ruler.  We created our own golden rules to help us!

Kingfishers having fun with numbers!

This week Kingfishers are thinking about counting objects correctly, recognising numbers and ordering numbers.  Some of our Kingfishers have been using the language '1 more' and '1 less' when working out missing numbers.

In the Mud Kitchen some children have been following recipes for Stone Soup, Leaf Salad, Fir Cone Stew, and other delicious meals.  When following these recipes the children have had to put in correct quantities into the mixing bowls.

During the night a number monster had visited our classroom and eaten some of our numbers. He left us a note saying that some of our friends had tried to stop him so he had tide them up (number monsters have to eat you know).  The number monster said he would give us the keys to let our friends go if we could work out the numbers he had eaten (the missing numbers). The children worked well together and managed to win the key and save their friends.

Another activity the children have enjoyed was giving their friends some hair!  The children had pictures of their classmates, but with their hair missing.  They needed to identify the number next to the photo, and add that amount of 'pasta hair' to the picture.

Super work Kingfishes!

Magic Maths

Year 3 have been working hard this week on multiplication and division. Today they designed a game to test their knowledge of the 2,5 and 10 times table.

Year 1 maths

This week we have been busy learning all about number and place value. We have used a range of our CPA resources to help us to count in 2s and find numberbonds to 10 and 20. I would like to say a big well done to the children this week. They have settled in so well to being year 1. I am very proud.

SWIFTS and MENTOS...!

Well...it is safe to say that the Swift class have absolutely loved Science Week! They have investigated and tested all sorts of weird and wacky experiments. As an epic end to a wonderful week we left the best until last!

Earlier today Swifts tested to see which bottles of liquid would react best with a packet of Mentos. They had three options: water, lemonade and coco cola.  In true Swift style, we predicted first, generated our scientific questions that we wanted to find out and set out to find the answers.

Below is a video of the lemonade and the coco cola...they were fab!

Well done Swifts, you've been super scientists all week!

Swifts Super Science continues...

Yesterday, super Swifts took part in another fun task linked to Science Week! They used their knowledge of 2D shapes and created a shape to test blowing bubbles with.  They had to create their shape out of wire and think about the size of it too! Once created, we predicted to see which mixture would work best.  Was it washing up liquid and water? Washing up liquid, water and glycerine or shower gel and water? Through a thorough test session of blowing bubbles (what fun it was) we knew which mixture was ideal.  It was in fact the... shower gel and water! The mixture was thicker than the other two and held the bubbles longer than the others.  Also, it did help having a smaller shape! Check out the fab pictures below...
