SCM Schools YouTube channel

Matt & Ellie from Southampton City Mission are finally launching the long-awaited, shiny new SCM Schools YouTube channel next week, on which they will be telling stories, doing magic tricks, answering questions, creating crafts, and as much of all the other fun stuff that they usually get up to during a visit to school as possible! The official launch will be happening with a live 'Online Assembly' at 3pm BST on Monday 6th April, but they'd really love you to get involved before then by clicking on the following link and hitting their subscribe button, so they have an audience to broadcast to next week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiX4q-jgs-1UiHRcblXGEUw/

Sharing the Challenge!

No Golden Book assembly today  - that starts again next week! Instead each class shared their ideas with the rest of the school about being a good learner and the learning challenges they have been talking about in school this week. Children should know about all about the challenges they have been setting themselves this week in school.

Supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind

Meet Jemma and her guide dog, Gus. Over the last year, we've been getting 'pupdates' which have allowed us to follow the progress of dogs like Gus being trained to become guide dogs. This training takes a lot of  money and a lot of dedication and the 'Guide Dogs for the Blind' association have been changing the lives of blind and partially sighted people for over 75 years. We were very lucky to have a visit from Jemma, who is blind, and her guide dog, Gus, to hear first hand what it's like to have a guide dog and the difference that makes to her everyday life. For more information, head over to www.guidedogs.org.uk and find out about how much it costs to train a guide dog and the work the charity does to support and raise awareness about  blind and partially sighted people.

Christingle Service

Due to the poor weather, we held this year's Christingle service in school and not at the Church of the Ascension. Rev Graham was still able to come and support us and the parents of reception children and narrators were invited to see our nativity. This is always a really nice way to end our term and, with only a few days to go before Christmas, to remind us all of the story of the baby Jesus. We hope you like the pictures!

Year 5 Victorian fun!

We have had a fun-filled couple of weeks in year 5! Last week, we visited SEARCH Gosport Historical museum to find out more about class differences in Victorian Britain. As part of this trip we were able to handle Victorian artefacts and even role play as the servants and masters/mistresses! Some of the children were even able to fully dress up in Victorian costume, while the class was taught about all the different articles of clothing which would have been worn!

This week, we have experienced a day in the life of a Victorian school child. The whole class dressed up in Victorian outfits and we followed the timetable of a Victorian school, including learning how to convert between farthings, pennies and shillings! The children were apparently most shocked about how strict Miss Starling, Mrs Martin and Mrs Meddings really could be!

We also performed our dance inspired by Victorian machines in the factories and retold the poem 'The Highwayman' with actions!

We would like to thank all of the adults both in school and at home that helped us to have so much fun these last two weeks!

Florence assembly

Year 2 retold the story of Florence Nightingale's life. They did extremely well and looked great in their costumes. All the children read their parts clearly and acted with confidence. They made all the props themselves and had fun. Well done Year 2.

Year 4 update

After learning about the parts of a river, as part of our topic work, Year 4 had great fun creating their own river! They made sandbanks to direct the water and the 'river' widened as it flowed down from its source - very realistic. The best part was testng it! Buckets of water were poured into the source and down the water flowed and out into the 'sea'. There was some flooding - but that happens in real life too.

Another highlight this term has been our involvement in the World of Water project run by Saints FC and Southern Water. Thank you to all the families that took part in the water usage survey. It's amazing just how much water we use daily, isn't it! Caprice was the lucky winner of the draw for a pair of Saints tickets to an upcoming match. Well done!

The school currently has the loan of 4 sets of handbells. In our Music lessons, the children have been learning to play them and are able to play the tunes to a couple of songs. It sounds amazing! Well done Year 4.

The class would like to invite their parents and family to a school assembly at 9am on Friday 3rd February in the hall. We'll then be able to share with you a range of the work that's we've been doing this term.

Rock n Roll Showcase!!!

Thank you to all the parents who made it to our rock n roll showcase last half term! We had great fun showing you all the different things we had learnt and created during our rock n roll topic! For those parents or carers that were unable to make it, here is a video of our dance that we created during some of our PE sessions! Enjoy!

Harvest Time

We would like to give a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our harvest collection. All the food will be given to the Basics Bank, a charity that supports those in need in Southampton. The Southampton City Mission, who organise the charity, told us that the food they receive from schools at harvest time sustains their giving throughout the whole year. According to their statistics they provided people with 5 days food 4,660 times last year! Below is a picture of Chris, one of their representatives, leading today's assembly.
