On Friday, Year 2 had a go at making the type of cakes that may have been cooking in the oven that started the Great Fire of London. We really thought they were yummy! If you would like to have a go yourself, here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

·         1 lb (400g) self-raising flour

·         ½ lb (200g) caster sugar

·         1 lb (400g) currants

·         ½ lb (200g) melted butter

·         3 tablespoons milk

·         3 egg yolks

·         pinch ground nutmeg

·         icing sugar to sprinkle on top

Method:

1.     Sieve the flour and mix with the sugar and currants.

2.    Add the melted butter, milk, egg yolks and nutmeg, and beat together.

3.    When you have mixed it into a smooth dough, put it by a fire (or in a very low oven) to rise.

4.    Make the warm dough in to little cakes and prick them full of holes.

5.    Cook at 200°C for about 15 minutes.

6.    Allow cakes to cool then sprinkle with the icing sugar.

7.    Enjoy your cakes!

BE VERY CAREFUL TO TURN THE OVEN OFF WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED!!!

Visiting the Mayor of Southampton

Our school councillors paid a visit to the Mayor of Southampton, councillor Derek Burke yesterday. He is the 790th Mayor of Southampton and was also Mayor in 1999. We were given an excellent tour of his offices in the civic centre and he talked about how much he enjoyed his role as Mayor. He was very impressed with some of the difficult questions we asked him! We really enjoyed our visit which was very interesting and the Mayor and Town Sergeant were brilliant at showing us round.

Solent Football Tournament

Year 5 and 6 boys took part in Solent football tournament yesterday. They did really well in the group stages, coming 2nd and only conceding 1 goal, well done our goalie! They then faced a tough team in the play-off stage, which knocked them out of the competition. The team that knocked us out went on to win the cup. The boys all had a great day and worked well together as a team.

Reward time KS2

Key Stage 2 children enjoyed reward time for their excellent behaviour in Spring 2 term.  This Monday they have taken part in obstacle races, running races and had some time playing on the wood chip and tyre park. Well done to all those children involved.

Fairthorne Trip

Year 4 had an amazing time at Fairthorne. All children attempted all of the activities, showing courage and determination and most all teamwork.

Thank you from Year 6!

Year 6 would like to say a HUGE thank you to the PTA who provided funds for new wet playtime games. We had a great time trying them out last week. Table football proved to be a favourite!

New member of Year 1

Look who has just decided to come and play!

Welcome to Bitterne Manor!

Egciting news!

I have been checking the eggs a lot over the past few days and when I opened the incubator this morning, you'll never guess what I saw....

A crack in an egg!

I was so concerned about the egg, thinking it was broken, I picked it up, and ...

IT CHEEPED!

I can officially say, the hatching has begun!

I will be back in tomorrow with (hopefully) some fluffy, new members for year 1.

Mosaic Renewed!

You may have noticed someone working on the mosaic art at the front of our school. Her name is Rachel Fenner and she is the original artist who designed and created it for us back in 1990. She has agreed to come back and attempt to restore and repair her work and to try to get it back as near as possible to what it was like when  new. It has been really interesting talking to her about the ideas behind her work and its historical context. Next time you're passing look out for the Roman and Celtic designs. Her original ideas and drawings are in the picture below. If you would like to know more about her art and other examples of her work in our area then head over to: http://rachelfenner.co.uk

Eggciting times!

We are all very egg-cited in year 1 at the moment and looking forward to welcoming our new classmates.  For the parents that haven't been dragged in yet, I thought I'd post a few pictures of our little friends.

The children have been learning all about hatching chicks and how we should look after them.

The eggs were put into the incubator on the 2nd of April so we are egg-specting the hatching to start on Monday.  (Don't worry about the weekends, they will be coming to stay at my house and if anything does happen I will make sure it is all captured and blogged!)

Fingers crossed that they all arrive safely and quickly, as it's just too egg-citing for us in year 1!
