Code Club: Latest Challenge...

This is the latest challenge from Code Club! Clear all the rocks in the time limit to win the game. Move the character using the arrow keys - you have 60 seconds . This is another game designed using '2Code' from Purple Mash. Well done to Alfie in Year 6 for putting this idea together...

Barclay's Code Playground

Barclays are offering the opportunity for free computer coding sessions for pupils aged 7 an over. If you might be interested follow this link to their website.

What is Code Playground?
You rarely see it, but computer code runs our world. Everything from the website you’re reading to the traffic lights on our roads relies on the mysterious world of code. It’s even part of the national curriculum now, and learning what makes tech tick could give your kids a head start in the world of work.
Give them a helping hand by bringing them along to a coding session with our Digital Eagles – experts who’ll guide your children as they take on fun challenges that introduce them to the basics of coding.

Tubs4Tabs

We would very much like everyone to start collecting Tubs4Tablets tokens now! This autumn Flora and Stork, in partnership with Tesco, are running an amazing scheme called Tubs4Tablets which aims to help our school bring cutting edge technology into the classroom. The scheme gives primary and middle schools in Great Britain the opportunity to collect tokens from special tubs of Flora and Stork on sale at Tesco from early October and exchange them for FREE touch screen tablets!

To help us make our campaign a success we need to collect as many tokens as possible. These can be found on promotional 500g tubs of Flora Original, Light and Buttery and Stork (subject to availability). Hand us your tokens… Just 50 tokens will get our school one brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0” Wi-Fi 8GB tablet so help us to claim as many as we can.

Please do spread the word!

Remember, if friends, neighbours, work colleagues and family can help too we could collect even more tokens to exchange for tablets. There’s no limit to the amount of FREE tablets we can claim for the school!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any support you can offer will help us to introduce modern technologies to the classroom and open a world of possibilities for our pupils.

New Tablets in Action!

Here are Year 6 in action for the first time using our new tablets as part of their lessons. Through your generosity in supporting our PTA fund raising events last year, we have purchased a set of 'Hudls' to use across the school. Children can use these to help them learn in all sorts of new and cool ways. Year 6 will also be taking them along on their trip to Milford on Sea next week.

Scratching the Surface...

This week we were visited by staff and pupils from Townhill Junior who were giving us an insight into the new computing curriculum. They were demonstrating 'Scratch' which is a free program that allows you to be a programmer yourself using a very simple and effective system of dragging and dropping blocks of 'code' - sounds complicated? It is - but a lot of our pupils are already enthused about creating their own games and taking this further. You can encourage them by heading over to http://scratch.mit.edu/ and giving it a go.

Year 3 Weekly report

This week we have been working very hard in maths!  We have learnt to draw 3D cubes and cuboids and a few other 3D shapes.  We have been solving 3D shape challenges and some of us have made cubes.

In literacy, we have been learning all about persuasive writing and we have been writing letters to Mrs Hayward, trying to persuade her to get rid of school uniform (but don't tell her, it's a secret!)

We have all written an email to Indiana Jones and we hope that it gets to him in his cave where he's being kept prisoner!  We will be searching for his treasure soon!

We are looking forward to art day on tuesday next week!

That's all for now,

Natasha, Ellen, Lana, Joe, Emily, Daniel Mc and Ether

Evacuation cum VE Day celebrations

To round off our History topic 'We'll Meet Again', Year 4 were evacuated to different locations during the morning. Each group experienced a different reception at their host 'school', which we were able to share in the afternoon. All groups did some baking plus planned a menu for the day using rationed items 'bought' from a local shop using ration cards.

VE Day was celebrated in the afternoon. At the end of the afternoon, many parents and family came to our 'street party' to celebrate with us. Work was displayed, along with homework projects. The class also showed their WWII documentary films, made using 'movie maker' during our ICT lessons. The class dressed in role and looked superb. What a great way to finish our topic!

Beebot Bonanza!

This week, year 5 have dived straight into their topic work! During our ICT lesson today, we were learning about programming and what it means in our day to day lives. We then all had a go at programming beebots in groups. We used the process of trial and error to reprogram them to follow the routes we had designed more accurately! As you can see, it was lots of fun, and we look forward to learning more about programming through the computer program 'Logo'!

Safer Internet Day 2012

"Do you ever feel that your children know more about online technologies than you do?"

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual event to promote the safe and responsible use of technology among children and young people. The focus of SID 2012 is ‘connecting generations’. It aims to encourage families to explore online technologies together. SID 2012 will be taking place on Tuesday 7th February with activities across the UK and beyond which we would like you to be a part of.

It is just as important to be involved in your children’s’ life online, than it is offline. Just as you would ask about their friends at school or the clubs they go to, you should use this approach with the people they meet online – ask the same questions and show the same interest.

To help get you started, CEOP are releasing the ‘Parents’ and Carers’ Guide to the Internet’ - a short, entertaining TV-style programme looking at what it’s like to bring up children in the online world.
Visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents on Tuesday 7th February. From this day, you will be able to view the ‘Parents’ and Carers’ Guide to the Internet’ and have access to information and guidance on how to keep your family safe online.

Year 5 Film Narratives

This half term we have been studying film in literacy. We have focused on the film clip 'The Piano'. As the finale of our project we created our own film narratives, which we then added to 'The Piano' in Windows Movie Maker. We had lots of fun doing this, and evaluated our end results whilst eating popcorn! Perhaps you would like to evaluate some of our narratives too?

Y1 visit Y3s FUN FACTORY!

Following Year 3s market research visit to Toys R Us recently, the children then made their own games using either magnets or springs to make parts move.

Year 1 have now visited our 'Fun Factory'. We began by showing some of our power points created to advertise our games. Then Year 1 got to work - having fun and testing the games. Much laughter and cheers and our visitors left covered in stickers having won so many games. Well done Year 3 for all your hard work!

Beebots

Year 2 have been learning about control technology using these great little devices called 'Beebots'. The idea is to program the Beebot so it follows a set path - in this case a track the children had drawn on sugar paper - but will it end up where you want it to?

Year 3s Archaeology Museum

When Year 3 opened their Archaeology Museum at the end of the first half term, we were delighted that so many visitors came to view our rock collection, study the information books we'd made and look at our travel brochures. The variety of brochures, powerpoint presentations and leaflets was amazing. Thank you for your support.
