A HUGE welcome to our Kingfishers

Our Kingfishers are now in school full time and are doing a marvellous job at settling into school and learning the routines and expectations.  We are very proud of how well they are doing.  They are such super stars!

This is what they have been up to!

We have been learning how to make playdough.  We then used the playdough to make cakes while we acted out 'Pat a cake'.  Playdough is definately a firm favourite in Kingfishers.

We have been thinking about where we live, looking at maps and photographs of the local area.  Our Kingfishers were very good at telling us about where they go in the local area.  They had fun using symbols from maps in our small world and making their own maps. It was lovely to hear from some of the class about other countries their families used to or still do live in.  We discussed and looked at different kinds of homes (e.g. flats, bungelows) and families, realising families can come in all shapes and sizes.

The class have loved sharing their baby photos and talking about how they have changed and what they can do now that they couldn't when they were smaller.  We read 'Once there were giants' and 'Peepo'.  We had some fantatsic discussions about the illustrations in 'Peepo'.  The children noticed coal being used on the fire, the outside toilet, the old fashioned cars, the clothes mangler, and many more items from 'the olden days'.  They have been enjoying looking at some of the items we have in class, such as the old telephone, typewriter and oil lamp.  I think we may have some historians in Reception!

Kingfishers have been discussing different people in our community and how they help us.  They were very good at coming up with a list of those who have an impact on their daily lives such as the lollypop lady, shop assistants, doctors, bus drivers, our school cleaners and many more.  We took some of their ideas to make 'mini' roleplays.  They enjoyed learning 'Miss Polly had a dolly' while pretending to be doctors, and 'The Wheels on the Bus' as they helped to set up our own bus.

You have been very busy Kingfishers.  Thank you for sharing all your wonderful knowledge and ideas with us.

Owls have been getting stuck into their new topic!

 Good Morning!

Owls have been super busy this week learning all about The Shang Dynasty.

On Friday, we had a range of images of artefacts from the dig at Yinxu. We examined them and talked in our groups about what they could be! We remembered our conversation with an archaeologist last year and asked questions such as, "how did it get here?", "what was this used for?" and "what does it tell me?" We came up with some wonderful ideas and learnt a lot about life in The Shang Dynasty!

We continued our research on Monday but this time we used secondary sources (which we know to be written after the event) to answer questions about The Oracle Bones! We found out that oracle bones were used for divination - which was a way of communicating with gods and ancestors!

Here are some pictures of us at work!

Cooking at Home Scheme

City Catering are once again offering families the opportunity to join the Cooking at Home Scheme during the October half term and Christmas holidays.  This is open to families whose children are entitled to free school meals and are at risk of food poverty and/or insecurity, and would benefit and welcome the support.  If this is something that you feel would be beneficial for your family, please do not hesitate to speak to Mrs Egerton, Mr Adams or Mrs Abbott in confidence.  The food boxes will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

First Day of School for a Wonderful New Kingfishers!!!

Today we welcomed our new Kingfisher class to school for the first time. They all came in looking smart in their new uniforms and fresh faced. We had smiley faces from the start of the day to the end. The teachers were really impressed with how amazing they all did for their first day. Mrs Hughes was very proud of all the children.

Today we learnt new rules and routines, and we also got to know our classmates. The children introduced themselves during a circle time. They were so brave and confident! They also did really good listening.

Take a look at some of the activities we had out today.

I look forward to seeing our wonderful Kingfishers tomorrow.
