Mayor Opens Our New Learning Garden!
Today saw the official opening of our new learning garden. We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Southampton to perform the ceremony and, along with our school council, he cut the ribbon to declare the garden area open. All pupils will get a chance to visit the area tomorrow and start using it straight away which is very exciting. The Mayor also spent some time touring the classrooms and meeting the children who asked him lots of interesting questions about his role.
Active Kids 2012
It's that time of year again! We are now collecting for Sainsbury's Active Kids 2012. Please ask for vouchers when shopping in your local store and support us by donating them in the box at our reception. Each year we manage to get enough vouchers to get some really amazing stuff for our children - every voucher you donate counts. Let's get collecting!

Cricket Winners
Our site manager Mr Rowles has led Bitterne Manor cricket team to Victory in a match against Townhill. We have had 3 matches, so far, and the scores have been very close. Each time the children have been steadily improving their cricket skills. Cricket at this level is new to Bitterne Manor this year and we also have coaches in curriculum time for other year groups. All the children are enjoying this new and exciting challenge .
The only way is up!!!

Marvellous measuring....
Year 5 came to the rescue of Miss Starling this week, by measuring how much food Miss Starling had left in her cupboards, so she knows exactly what to put on her shopping list! They practised estimating the weight first, before then using scales to check the accuracy of their estimates! We will be putting the skills we have learnt to the test when we make chocolate brownies and bread later this half term!

A group of Year 1 children went to Bitterne Park School to learn some netball skills! The students from Bitterne Park worked with the children to show them how to throw and catch a ball as well as shooting. They ended by playing a game using their new skills. Well done Year 1 and thank you to Bitterne Park for hosting this fun event!

Lots of fun in Year 1!
Year 1 have been busy measuring and comparing objects as well as different parts of their body.
Year 1 have been giving and following a range of different instructions. They made pasta skeletons by reading and following instructions but the legs did keep falling off!
A big well done for all of the fantastic homework projects. Year 1 were brilliant at speaking and listening whilst sharing their projects! They also made their own 'All about me' booklets and enjoyed binding their work to make the booklet!

Year 5 Victorian fun!
We have had a fun-filled couple of weeks in year 5! Last week, we visited SEARCH Gosport Historical museum to find out more about class differences in Victorian Britain. As part of this trip we were able to handle Victorian artefacts and even role play as the servants and masters/mistresses! Some of the children were even able to fully dress up in Victorian costume, while the class was taught about all the different articles of clothing which would have been worn!
This week, we have experienced a day in the life of a Victorian school child. The whole class dressed up in Victorian outfits and we followed the timetable of a Victorian school, including learning how to convert between farthings, pennies and shillings! The children were apparently most shocked about how strict Miss Starling, Mrs Martin and Mrs Meddings really could be!
We also performed our dance inspired by Victorian machines in the factories and retold the poem 'The Highwayman' with actions!
We would like to thank all of the adults both in school and at home that helped us to have so much fun these last two weeks!

Year 3's magical writing environment!
We made our classroom magical and listened to music while we wrote our Myths and Legends stories!
Everyone is really proud of their story. Some of us were so pleased we wrote our stories up on laptops and did extra editing using ICT. A few of us even stayed in at lunchtime because we were so excited about our writing and wanted to write more!
Year 3 HELP we need water for our pet dragon!
Once we had fed our pet dragon we then discovered we needed to provide the right amount of water for our pet too! Pet dragons involve a lot of looking after! We all enjoyed measuring litres and millilitres.
Year 3 - DT
Year 3 have been designing model dragons.
We are going to use pneumatic's to make our dragons move.
This is us starting to build our dragons!
It's harder than it looks but great fun!
Year 3 - Data collection
Year 6 Spy Day!
Today Year 6 became secret agents! They created new identities for themselves & were sent on missions around the school. They successfully managed to release Rex the Eco-warrior Squirrel from a hostage situation and spy on classes to gather top secret information! At the end of the day they shared their Spy Kit Homework Projects with Year 2 children.

Safer Internet Day 2012
"Do you ever feel that your children know more
about online technologies than you do?"
Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual event to promote the safe
and responsible use of technology among children and young people. The focus of
SID 2012 is ‘connecting generations’.
It aims to encourage families to explore online technologies together. SID 2012
will be taking place on Tuesday 7th
February with activities across the UK and beyond which we would like you
to be a part of.
It is just as important to be
involved in your children’s’ life online, than it is offline. Just as you would
ask about their friends at school or the clubs they go to, you should use this
approach with the people they meet online – ask the same questions and show the
same interest.
To help get you started, CEOP
are releasing the ‘Parents’ and Carers’
Guide to the Internet’ - a short, entertaining TV-style programme looking
at what it’s like to bring up children in the online world.

Florence Nightingale museum
Year 2 have worked so hard on their homework projects. These were put together to create a Florence Nightingale museum. The exhibits included a video clip, a portrait of Florence, the Order of Merit she received, some lamps, models of her pets, information about her life, a battle scene of the Crimean War and a Florence model. There were posters, pieces of writing, artwork, creative ideas and information packs. Well done Year 2. It was very impressive.
Year 2 make block graphs
Year 2 had a visit from the school nurse. She talked about healthy living and the importance of having 'five a day'. We have been thinking about our favourite fruits. We have collected data and made block graphs.
Florence assembly
Year 2 retold the story of Florence Nightingale's life. They did extremely well and looked great in their costumes. All the children read their parts clearly and acted with confidence. They made all the props themselves and had fun. Well done Year 2.
