Learning Leader Elections 2016

Bitterne Manor Primary became a polling station today for the annual election of our Lead Learners. Each class has voted for two pupils to represent them on our School Council as Lead Learners. Each year we borrow real ballot boxes from Southampton's electoral services department and carry out a proper ballot democratically. The two children receiving the highest numbers of votes in each class are then officially elected. We will announce the results later today to the children.

The School Decides...

Today candidates from across the school were given a last chance to persuade their peers to vote for them in tomorrow's Learning Leader elections. Children have been nominated and the ballot papers are prepared for the secret ballot in which all the children get to choose the two children in their class who will represent them. This is democracy in action!

Meeting the Mayor of Southampton

Our Learning Leaders went to meet the Mayor of Southampton yesterday and had a very interesting tour of the Mayor's offices. Councillor Linda Norris is the 793rd 'Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton', to give her the correct title, and was pleased to meet the children and talk to them about her role. She was assisted by one of the city's Town Sergeants and each of the children got to handle some of the collection of ceremonial objects and try on some robes of office. We learnt a lot more about the role of the Mayor in supporting a range of local charities like the Saints Foundation, Rose Road and Air Cadets. For more information follow this link.

Election 2014

Elections took place today for this year's school councillors. We have a new theme for our school council this year - 'Learning to Lead'. We'll be announcing our new class leaders next week - so the children will have to wait for the result a little bit longer!

Visiting the Mayor's Parlour

Here are some pictures of the School Council's visit to the Mayor's Parlour in the Civic Centre, Southampton. We were very kindly hosted by the newly appointed Sheriff of Southampton, Linda Norris and one of her Town Sergeants, Alan. The visit is a fascinating look at Southampton's traditions and history and we always learn something new about the city each time we visit.

Mayor Making 2014

Two of our school councillors were invited to attend the annual Southampton Mayor Making ceremony at the Guildhall. This is the occasion where the existing Mayor of Southampton passes on the office to a new Mayor, a tradition which goes back several hundred years.

Weekly report by year 3

We have had a very busy week!  We have enjoyed playing basketball in PE.  Our favourite part of literacy was writing our reports and we enjoyed our poster competition.  Our geography rain guage was AWESOME!  We are enjoying counting up how much rain has fallen.  We have voted for our school councillor today.

We are looking forward to finding out who is going to be our school councillors.
