Hands on - it's Science Day!

What an exciting day to end the half term! Each class moved round their keystage investigating a range of different questions from Do bigger bubbles fall faster than smaller ones? to How high will my rocket fly? to Is it a liquid or is it a solid? plus many more.

The children worked well in teams, using their scientific knowledge to work out the answers and conduct their testing. Very impressive work everyone :) We finished the day by sharing our findings in an assembly.

Year R visited Hawthorns Wildlife Centre

On Friday Year R visited Hawthorns at Southampton Common.

We took part in a variety of activities including taking on the role of squirrels and hiding 'nuts', acting as birds looking for different coloured caterpillars, mini-beast hunting, finding brass rubbings and using the activity rooms.

We had a fantastic time. Year R were very well behaved. Well done Year R. Thank you to those parents who came and helped us.

Spring Collage

As part of our 'Spring' topic Year R have worked together to produce some 'Spring' pictures. The class discussed what made them think of Spring and came up with ideas such as chicks, Easter eggs, lambs, flowers and Christian crosses. They then used various materials to show these ideas in their pictures.

Zoom!

Year R have been busy in the last few weeks producing their very own methods of transport. They designed these, planned the materials and resources they wanted to use and then made their vehicles. Some were very creative, deciding they wanted to make a 'flying flower' and a 'rainbow flying car'.

They children look toward to their parents coming to see their work next Thursday.

Chinese New Year in Year R

Last Thursday, as part of our 'Around the World with Barneby Bear' topic, Year R celebrated Chinese New Year.

After writing a list of ingredients, we made Chinese noodles. When we had our party we ate these. Some fo us enjoyed the noodles so much that we had thirds!!!

We enjoyed making up actions and learning the words to the song 'Chinese New Year Is Here'.

The class also watched dragon and lion dance video clips. We then made up our own dragon dances.

Year R get dancing!

In Year R we are very lucky to have a dance coach teaching us for this half term. We have been learning a Chinese dance, how to mirror each other and a skeleton dance. It's been great fun.

Year R's 3D shape hunt

Year R went on a 3D shape hunt. They were looking for hidden shapes. Some of the children could spot these shapes in objects and equipment. Super hunting Year R.

Key Stage One Guildhall choir

Well done to the Key Stage One choir who were excellent at the Guildhall concert. They worked very hard at the rehearsals in the morning and had lots of fun. They were fantastic at acting 'Christmas with the aliens' and their singing was beautiful. The costumes looked wonderful and the children made us all very proud. What a superb evening!

Jack Frost!

Year R's new topic 'Jack Frost' is well under way!

The children have discussed what they already know about Jack Frost and the seasons Autumn and Winter, and have thought about what else they would like to find out.

The class have made pictures that made them think of frost and thought of words they could use to describe their pictures.

They have also produced repeating patterns using natural resources, such as fir cones, leaves, twigs and shells.

We have been making firework pictures. The class watched a clip of some
fireworks and thought about the colours and shapes they saw. They used their ideas to help them make their fantastic pictures. The children thought about how to keep safe on firework night, understanding that it is fun to see fireworks but we need to be sensible. Pupils have also been learning about why we celebrate 5th November.
