Sensational Skylarks are getting musical!

This term Sensational Skylarks have had the fantastic opportunity to learn the clarinet!

With lessons taking place once a week Skylarks have the chance to show off their musical talents, and they truly are rising to the challenge! The children have absolutely loved learning a new skill and their willingness to listen and learn to be the best they can be has really shone through. They have already started to learn different notes and how to play a tune in a time as a class.

Take a peak below at some pictures of the musical fun we have been having...

Cross Country Team Bitterne Manor

Well done to all 17 children who took part in the Southampton Schools Cross Country event this evening. I was so impressed with the grit and determination our pupils' showed in what is a tough event against over 300 other children from schools across the city. Great effort and I hope the experience was positive... as what's even more exciting - we'll be racing again next week! They should all be looking forward to it - and I'll remember the kits this time. I do have to make a special mention of Hubert and Poppy who came 6th and 14th respectively. They'll need to be watching out as there is some real talent close behind them in the younger part of the school...

Guildhall Christmas Concerts

It is that time of year again when we start rehearsing for the annual Guildhall Christmas Concert.  This year we are only able to take 30 pupils from Years 2 and 3 for the lower school performance of S!ng Christmas and 25 pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 for the upper school performance of The Peace Child.  Miss Sangha and Miss E Jones will speak to the children tomorrow to find out who wishes to participate. We will prioritise those pupils who have never had an opportunity to participate before;  however, we may need to pick names from a hat if more children express an interest than we are able to take.

The rehearsals will take place for both performances on Tuesday lunchtimes.  There will also be rehearsals on Saturday 17th November and Saturday 1st December at Great Oaks School, Vermont Close, SO16 7LT, from 9.15am to 10.30am.  We have already uploaded the music onto the school website (see Christmas Music 2018 under the parents tab) so those children taking part can begin to learn the songs at home.  The actual performance will take place on Tuesday 4th December at 7pm but further details will be sent out nearer the time.

No nuts in school please!

We will be sending home a letter this week reminding parents that pupils are not able to bring in homemade products to share with their class, as it is not known what ingredients are in these and there is a concern that they could cause an allergic reaction.  Therefore, in the interest of all our pupils’ safety, please do not send homemade treats into school to be shared.  If your child does wish to bring in a treat to share with the class, please ensure this is shop bought and has the ingredients clearly listed.  Obviously, no products containing nuts can be brought into school at any time, this includes in pupils’ lunch boxes or for a snack.

SUPER SWIFTS LOVE SCIENCE!

Guess what? Today, the SUPER SWIFT class were given the task of creating a micro-habitat for a chosen mini-beast! The mini-beasts were... woodlouse, worm, shield bug, slug/snail, spider and a lady bird.  They thought carefully about the shelter of their homes and the environment around it.  It was FUN! Take a sneak peak at what they created below...

A big welcome to the new Kingfishes

A big welcome to the youngest members of our school, our new Kingfishers!

They have had a fantastic first few days and we are so proud of how well they have settled in at school.  Their behaviour has been great- they have even won the school lunch time bear, Kind Kevin!

The children have been busy building obstacle courses, roleplaying, taking part in listening games (including a listening walk around the school), painting their self portraits, and many more activities.  They particularly enjoyed having a tour of the school, where they got to see other siblings and friends in other classes.

What superstars are you Kingfishers.  Keep up the great work!

Kestrels visit the Natural History Museum

Kestrels had a fantastic day yesterday in London visiting the Natural History Museum.  We were primarily there to explore the 'red zone' Volcanoes and Earthquakes displays (including the earthquake simulator) and to take part in a workshop learning more about natural disasters and how scientists can predict volcanic eruptions and keep people safe in areas of volcanic activity.  However, we also took the opportunity to explore the rest of the museum and loved seeing the large mammals (including the blue whale) and the dinosaurs.  We were also lucky enough to have a hands-on investigative session where the children were able to use powerful microscopes to look more closely at a range of really interesting specimens. It was lovely to see all the children really engaged and motivated by the activities.
After leaving the museum we were treated to a little tour of some of the sights of London, including Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, The London Eye and The Thames.
It really was a fantastic day out!

Owls soar into space!

Owls had an amazing day last Thursday when they visited the Winchester Science Centre!

In a super fun workshop, we explored light, what it is made up of and how it travels across space. We got to play with infrared lights and solve puzzles with lasers. We had fantastic fun exploring all of the unique exhibits that were out on display that taught us all about how people survive in space!

We had a brilliant show in the planetarium where we got to soar through the universe to the outer reaches of our solar system! We saw all of our planets up close and were taught the constellations in our night skies!

It was a fantastic day out!
