World Book Day FUN!

 Bitterne Manor celebrated World Book Day this year with a BANG! We had a whole week celebrating our love of books 📚

We launched the start of the week with a 'Teacher Read.' All the teachers shared a favourite book of theirs and children could decide which book they'd really like to hear. This was really fun, both teachers and children really enjoyed this.

As a whole school, we focused on the author 'Aaron Becker.'

Ducklings, Kingfishers, Robins and Swifts looked at the book 'Journey.'

Skylarks and Jays looked at the book 'Quest.'

Owls and Kestrels looked at the book 'Return.'

Each class looked at lots of reading opportunities linked to their text and children produced a writing outcome too. It has been wonderful seeing children really immersed and excited by these texts! 

On World Book Day, Miss Hughes did a whole school assembly where children could show off their costumes and strut down the Bitterne Manor runway. Staff joined in too! 😁

Children then celebrated the day with lots of activities, visiting the school library to take part in the 'how many books are in our library' competition, reading with another class and sharing their favourite books!

Black History Week in Kestrels

                                     

Kestrels have loved learning all about influential black Britains as part of our focus for Black History Week.  We have been reading Floella Benjamin's story, 'Coming to England' in English and even got to see it performed live at the Mayflower Mast Theatre on Tuesday.  We have had a go at writing part of her story in our own words and have loved illustrating our narratives too!

In addition, we have learned all about HMS Windrush and the contributions that West Indian people have made to British culture and society.  We found out about Claudia Jones and her reasons for founding the Notting Hill Carnival, as well as making our own vibrant carnival masks.

  

Ninja Warrior Fun!

Those kestrels who stayed in school this week have had a fantastic time this afternoon at Ninja Warrior. We have also enjoyed doing lots of crafts and activities this week, including baking smartie cookies. I think it's safe to say they've had a fun week!
