HMS Victory and The National Museum of the Royal Navy! ARRRRRRH!

Today Nightingales became PIRATES! (ARRRRRRRHH!) and invaded the National Museum of the Royal Navy and HMS Victory!

As part of today's trip Nightingales took part in a 'Royal Navy Shipmates' workshop where they learnt what it was like for a sailor at the time of HMS Victory (1753) including: the food they ate; how to tie knots; the clothes they wore; how the ships used flags to communicate and looked closely at real artifacts from the time such as the 'Bosun's Starter', a type of whip used to punish misbehaving sailors!

Next, Year 3 went on a discovery visit of HMS Victory and learnt about Admiral Nelson and Captain Hardy. The children explored all of the ship including the gun decks, the sick bay, Nelsons day cabin and even Nelsons personal toilet! They learnt the history of what happened to Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, stood where he fell and saw where he eventually died.

Finally, the children explored the National Museum of the Royal Navy itself learning more about how the Navy has changed from the time of HMS Victory right up to the present day!

Shiver me timbers! What an exciting (and educational!) day!

Mr Jennings/Captain Jack Sparrow!

Sniffing the smells from on board including, gunpowder smoke, deck tar, malted barley and rum!

The spot where Admiral Nelson finally died, 3 hours after being shot by a French musket ball into his spine. He continued to give out orders to the fleet during these final hours!

The hold, where all the food, water, coal, wood, supplies and rum was stored.

A real captured Jolly Roger. The red colour meant that these pirates showed no mercy and would leave no man alive from a captured ship!

What a tiring day!

We did it!

A massive well done to Year 6 for all the hard work they have put in this week to their SAT's.  You did it!  Their attitude towards the tests has been exemplary and we really couldn't ask any more of them.  They all showed that they are 'learning to be the best they can be!'  Well done guys, we are very proud of you all.
As a post SAT's treat they all tucked into donuts before doing some creative artwork for the rest of the day.  The focus of the artwork was emphasising all the other aspects (apart from English and Maths!) that they are good at, or make them special and individuals.  I hope you'll agree that the display they produced looks amazing - good job Kestrels!

Super Hero Cereal Bars

Year 5 had their DT day today, where they baked their very own Super Hero Cereal Bars!  They got to create their own recipes, design the packaging and make their cereal bars in small groups.  We only got to bake the last batch at the very end of the day, so we are going to taste them all tomorrow and decide which one we like best and why?  Will it be "Titan Bites", "Batman Bars" or another that takes the title?  We will find out tomorrow!

We Need You!

We'd appreciate your support in helping run our Summer Fayre this year! Please sign in with your child's class teacher or a member of the PTA. Guess who's up for getting 'gunged' this year...?

It's the Super Owls!!

This week Owls class will be writing their very own Superhero story in English.  They have created their own superheroes with names like "Electrogirl", "Shift" and "Elementro" and have today been mag-pieing ideas from other superhero stories to use in their own adventures.  Our favourite ideas were  a spreading virus, an erupting volcano and an evil vacuum that sucks up all the money from the city banks!  We are really looking forward to getting creative and writing our own Superhero Adventure Stories.

It's SATs Week!!

It's breakfast club for our pupils in Year 6 this week. Along with all the other children waking up this morning across the country, it's time for SATs! We'd like to shout out loud how very proud we are of all the children and their attitude towards learning which is exemplary. This week is going to be tough on them but we know they'll do their very best and remember that that is all anyone can ever ask of them. Our best wishes and thoughts go out to all 11 year old's everywhere!

Judging Jabba... PTA Quiz time!

One of the more controversial rounds at the PTA Quiz event.... teams were played a short clip from a certain classic film and asked to observe as questions would follow. Instead of the expected questions, each team was asked to create a true likeness of the sluggish criminal overlord from Plasticine. This was clearly a moment for Mr Gould to shine as the staff team benefited from his clearly extensive recall of the films - guess which one was his? Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of things, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Star Wars franchise was insufficient to see the staff team hitting the top spot this time round. Thanks to all those who took part and supported the PTA!
