Be Bright, Be Seen!

On Tuesday, we welcomed Bike It Jenny into assembly to talk to us about 'Be Bright, Be Seen'!
Now the weather is getting colder and darker, we need to keep ourselves safe when walking or cycling/scooting to and from school.
Pedestrians should wear something bright coloured and something reflective at night. Choose a bag or rucksack with hi-visibility strips. Fluorescent and reflective armbands can be worn over coats and clothing, and stickers can be used on bags.
At night, your bike MUST have white front and red rear lights lit, it must also be fitted with a red rear reflector. White front reflectors can also help you to be seen, and spoke reflectors will help other road users see you from the side.

Musical and Magnificent Nightingales!

Magnificent Nightingales have been getting musical this half term with our clarinet lessons. This week we even began to play our first song! We love developing our new skill and putting it into practice.

Kingfishers having fun with numbers!

This week Kingfishers are thinking about counting objects correctly, recognising numbers and ordering numbers.  Some of our Kingfishers have been using the language '1 more' and '1 less' when working out missing numbers.

 
In the Mud Kitchen some children have been following recipes for Stone Soup, Leaf Salad, Fir Cone Stew, and other delicious meals.  When following these recipes the children have had to put in correct quantities into the mixing bowls.

During the night a number monster had visited our classroom and eaten some of our numbers. He left us a note saying that some of our friends had tried to stop him so he had tide them up (number monsters have to eat you know).  The number monster said he would give us the keys to let our friends go if we could work out the numbers he had eaten (the missing numbers). The children worked well together and managed to win the key and save their friends.

Another activity the children have enjoyed was giving their friends some hair!  The children had pictures of their classmates, but with their hair missing.  They needed to identify the number next to the photo, and add that amount of 'pasta hair' to the picture.

PTA AGM! EVERYONE WELCOME!

After 3 fabulous years, our current PTA Chair Jennie Mugridge will be stepping down but will continue to be a PTA Helper. Thankfully, we have had a nomination from another parent to come forward to replace her and will be officially confirmed at this meeting. Dan Jennings will continue his key role as Treasurer but this does leave a gap for a Secretary.

We are looking for somebody who can support the PTA chair and Treasurer with:

•Half-termly PTA meeting minute taking

•Liaising with School Office over letters for upcoming events

•Facebook and school blog updates

Super Swifts get creative!

During our Art sessions we have been looking at the work of Andy Goldsworthy.  In particular his work on natural sculptures!  SUPER Swifts were asked to create something similar using the natural resources outside.  They thought so hard about the shape, pattern and colours used!  Take a sneak peak of their crafty creations below.  Move over Andy, there are some new artists around...

Robins take two!

Robins class have been very busy investigating what happens when we count in 2's.
We had to hunt for socks around the classroom and get together with our pair.

We then counted how many pairs we had and hung them on the washing line!

They are now helping us with our work for the rest of the week :-)

Well done Robins, some excellent Maths going on this term!

Get Cycle Savvy!

We’re pleased to inform you that on Tuesday 9^th October, Sustrans will be coming in to school between 2pm and 4pm to run a cycle event for families, and the Air Quality Team will also be in school to talk about the impact of pollution around our school area.

Get Cycle Savvy is a campaign by ‘My Journey’ to help Southampton residents choose the right bike, ensure it is safe to ride, feel confident cycling on the road, and discover new routes. This includes online “how-tos” and case study videos, but the Get Cycle Savvy Pit Stop aims to bring these opportunities to life in different parts of the city. The Pit Stop event that they will bring to school includes:

· Try-a-bike: hybrids, e-bikes, cargo bikes, kids bikes

· See and try different child seats and trailers

· Bike Dr: bring your bike to get it fixed/checked over for free (ex. Parts)

· The very popular Ditch the Stabilisers session (with Bike it Jenny)

The Air Quality team will also be visiting school during this afternoon to work with Year 4 children on the amount of pollution around our school, bringing a  new, mobile air quality display model that was designed by the Winchester Science Centre (there is a permanent version of this on display at the Winchester Science Centre – see photo).  The model illustrates to children the impact of various travel choices on the levels of air pollution that they breathe into their lungs. This will also be on display for parents and children after school in Rooks classroom.
