Farewell, not Goodbye

Mrs Hemnell has amazed us all by managing to continue working to the very end of her pregnancy term.  In Assembly she was presented with an abundance of baby paraphernalia, which we are sure will be very useful in the coming weeks. We wish her and Mr Hemnell all the very best and will await some good news very soon.

A talent with a very bright future at Bitterne Manor

Year 6 has a new found talent in their midst. The sport of snooker had better watch out as a year 6 boy is winning trophies and matches against children older and with more training. Obviously a natural talent has emerged.

Year 4 update

What a busy week we've had! First we carried out some fieldwork near the source of the River Itchen, at Cheriton.

In an assembly to our parents and the school, we shared some of the work we've been doing this term, connected to our topic 'Save our River'. A mixture of written work, facts, art, dance and music. Well done everyone for all your hard work!

Recently, the class have been harvesting the vegetables and fruit they've been growing. Our triumph have been two pumpkins. We scooped out the seeds and saved these for planting next year. Then we scooped out the flesh, steamed it and used it to make some pumpkin pies! The class voted for their favourite designs for making faces. We've had fun with the fruits of our labour.

Year 4 round off their 'Save our Rivers' topic

This week Year 4 will be visiting Cheriton, close to the source of the River Itchen. Our visit will give the children first hand experience of geography fieldwork and a chance to study elements of river formation.
The river source springs from underground, forming a pool of water

Year 4 parents are invited to an assembly at 9am on Friday morning, 8th February, to learn more about our topic work this term. We hope to see many of you there!

After school, also on Friday 8th February, the class are holding a cake sale to raise funds for the charity WaterAid, which we have been supporting. Their aim is to use practical solutions to provide clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people. Please support us by visiting our cake sale. Thank you.

Celebrating Music Day!

Alex and Ben led a workshop for each class during Music Day. Topics linked with our curriculum and children and staff all had great fun participating in warm up games followed by different groups creating and performing music.

Throughout the day, all our activities were based around music - from learning new songs, to listening to music and creating descriptions or drawings to match the music moods, to making our own fantastice instruments to composing soundscapes with our own instruments! Wow!

Here are just a few photos celebrating our musical day.

Year 4 Evacuation Day

It was time to turn back time in year 4 on Thursday 21st June. The class (and adults) came to school in '1940's' dress ready for Evacuation Day. During register the sirens sounded and we quickly went into the air raid shelter. We were horrified to see the bomb damage to the classroom when we returned. For our safetey we were evacuated to other classrooms. During our evacuation, we cooked with rations (thank you Mrs S!!) and painted war posters with watercolour.

In the afternoon, we held a VE party celebration in assembly, sharing the work we have done over the past half term.
