Night Time Fear Study

Understanding the Origins of NightTime Fear in Childhood

Email: nightimestudy1@soton.ac.uk

Who is managing the study?

We are a group of researchers (David Keep, Dr Julie Hadwin and Professor Matt Garner)  from the School of Psychology, at the University of  Southampton

Who can take Part?

We are recruiting healthy male and female children between the ages 7 – 11 and their parent/caregiver to take part in a study that aims to understand why some children experience nighttime fears and  difficulties sleeping.

What does your participation involve?

You and your child/dependant will be asked to complete a survey that has 3 main sections.  The first section asks parents/ caregivers  to tell us about themselves.  The second section asks parents/ caregivers to tell us about their child/ dependent.  The third section is for your child/ dependent to complete about themselves.

Then your child will also be asked to complete a task on a computer. The task and the survey will be completed at home on your own computer.

What is the benefit of taking part?

Nighttime fears and poor sleep quality in children have shown to be associated with development of poor psychological well-being.  Understanding this phenomenon will inform the development of  tools to help both parents/ caregivers and children to manage nighttime fear.  To thank you for participating, you will be reimbursed a £5 amazon e-voucher for you and your child’s participation.

Thank you very much for your time.
