SCIENCE WEEK LAUNCH!

Science week got off to a super start today with a special appearance from two "Mad Scientists" called Professor Husslefluff and Professor McHayward!

They came in, with their crazy blue hair, to show the children some experiments like - how to make a glitter volcano!

A big thank you to the Professors for giving up their time to come and launch British Science Week at Bitterne Manor!  Let's hope they can come back and visit us next year!

Rooks Day 1 Science Week

Today Rooks began their introduction into Electricity and circuits.

"I loved today, it was fun and I learnt lots!" Kayden

"What I have liked about Science Day is we have learnt lots of new things but had fun at the same time." Victoria

"Especially the experiments at the beginning of today and lots of new stuff about circuits!" Seth

Today we began by identifying different types of appliances and whether they use mains electricity, battery or are manual.  The children learned that an appliance is a device, piece of equipment or an instrument designed to perform a task.

This afternoon, the class looked at circuits using a Human Circuit Maker Breaker.  We formed human circuits and tested different objects to see if the current would flow through the material being inserted into the circuit for instance a wooden ruler.

Quotes from Rooks members
"I really liked the fact we could transport electricity. It was amazing!" Lucas
"I found out electricity can go through us and metals and not wood." Kayden
"I learnt not all materials can carry on the circuit and some can." Saiya
"I learnt wooden and plastic will not allow electricity through, only metal can make it go through."Seth
"I learnt plastic will not let it go through." Kobey
"I learnt that metal with plastic on the end can't let the electric circuit go through." Jason

Year 6 Bootcamp!

As part of their 'Stormbreaker' topic, Year 6 took part in their very own bootcamp! This was to help them write in role as the main character, Alex Rider, as he undertakes SAS training in preparation for becoming a spy. The children were put through their paces with physical challenges and an assault course!

Hola from owls!

This afternoon owls class had a cultural afternoon spent finding out about Spain with our student Miss Osborne.  They learnt about flamenco dancing,  spanish words for colours and classroom objects and they even had a little food tasting of olives, chorizo and madeleines!! "Gracias" Miss Osborne!

Rooks Trip to Fairthorne Manor

Rooks returned, after 2 days of team building fun!

We have had a fantastic two days at Fairthorne Manor.  The children have climbed, zipped, scrambled and shot (arrows) - not forgetting danced their socks off, at the Fairthorne Disco!

Day One

The children undertook the 'Crate Challenge' which involved wearing a harness and working with a partner to build a tower made out of crates.  This challenge involved team-work, balance and a large amount of trust.  The tallest structure was an amazing 11 crates high.  The Rook champions for the highest crate tower goes to Theo and Mia!  Well done to you both!
Second place, goes to Reggie and Bailey who were one short with a tower of 10!

Day One, also consisted of the 'Ariel Runway'.  Again, the children were strapped into harnesses but instead of climbing up, they were sent sailing through the air on a zip-wire over a small river.  The children were all very brave with no-one screaming quite as loudly as Mrs Johnson!!

After a busy afternoon the children hit the showers and prepared themselves for dinner and an evening of dancing!
The disco ended, with juice and a biscuit before bed, and not forgetting the bedtime story from Miss Cryne!

Day Two

Saw some early risers.  We all headed for breakfast at 7:55am then back to the rooms to pack our belongings before heading out to the Team Challenge and Archery.

The Team Challenge involved the children working together to overcome obstacles in an obstacle race.  The main twist however was the mud!  As you can see from the photographs a lot of fun was had by all!!

We ended the trip with an Archery lesson and lunch.  An activity that was a little dryer and had a lot less mud involved!!

The trip was over! Bags were loaded onto the coach and everyone returned to school, tired, happy and although still a little MUDDY!
