Swifts and Swallows are 'BIRD-TASTIC!'

What an exciting start to the week Year 2 have had today! The AMEW's Falconry were invited in to teach us all about the different birds of prey found in our area and linked to our topic this half term, 'Into the Forest.'  Mandy and Paul really loved the children's questions and awarded them gold stars for their enthusiasm.  Well done super Swifts and Swallows, we are very proud!  Here are some highlights from today's visit...be prepared though as the video is very scream-ish...

The Great Bitterne Bake Off!

Science week in Year 5 culminated in a Great Bitterne Bake off this afternoon, as we applied all of the skills that we have been learning this week to design and bake our very own bread.  We worked in groups to make our bread with a fantastic team of parent helpers.

We then presented our bread to the Judges - Mary Berry-Rice and Paul Hollywood-Pucket!  They smelt, tasted and felt the bread to decide who would take the crown for the best tasting bread.  It was the "Chocolate Sensation" bread that was the favourite, with it's taste and texture like a lardy cake!  Awards were also given to the best presented and best teamwork.  Well done to everyone - what a fantastic week and thank you SO much the fabulous parent helpers - I hope you got to have a taste!!

Super Science in Year 5!

Owls class have had a great start to Science Week!  Our topic is bread, so we have tasted lots of different breads and evaluated their smell, taste and texture.

We have found out about the science of yeast and how it works and used a bottle and balloon to show how it gives off Carbon Dioxide.

We have also been shown how to make a basic bread recipe and designed our very own bread recipes for our Great Bitterne Bake off tomorrow!

Good luck to all the groups and don't forget to bring in your "extra" ingredients.

SCIENCE WEEK LAUNCH!

Science week got off to a super start today with a special appearance from two "Mad Scientists" called Professor Husslefluff and Professor McHayward!

They came in, with their crazy blue hair, to show the children some experiments like - how to make a glitter volcano!

A big thank you to the Professors for giving up their time to come and launch British Science Week at Bitterne Manor!  Let's hope they can come back and visit us next year!

Owl's "great" trip to Winchester

Owls class visited Winchester today as part of their Anglo Saxon topic. First we went to the Great Hall to see the round table inspired by the Legends of King Arthur and dressed up as the characters from the story of the sword in the stone.  We then went to the magnificent Winchester Cathedral for a guided tour of the Anglo Saxon kings and bishops that are buried there. Year 5 were beautifully behaved and showed off all the learning that we have been doing this term. Well done Owls. Once again, a big thanks to the helpers and drivers.

Year 3 English WOW Day!

In English over the past week, Year 3 have been looking at the story of Moses, (linked to Ancient Egypt). This week we are going to retell the story in our own words, and to help us with this we have been creating a 3D story mountain!

We separated the story into 10 different parts and worked in groups of 3 to create a diorama in a box.

We are then planning to retell the story using microphones, and then eventually get together with Year 4 and tell the story really well, before writing our own version.

Here are just some photos of how they look so far!
