UK Good Diabetes Care in School Award

Following a nomination to Diabetes UK, we are proud to announce that we have been awarded the UK Good Diabetes Care in School Award.  This is a brand new award scheme which celebrates and showcases schools that deliver good care and support to children and young people with Type 1 diabetes.  We are very proud to be amongst a few schools in the country to have achieved this award and look forward to supporting other local schools in the future.  In the meantime, look out for the official Good Diabetes Care in School Award logo on our letterhead paper.

Football First!

There are a few items that have missed out on being blogged this year, so I thought I would try to complete a mini update and include some pictures!

Football First!  The school football team has had full on start to the season.  We played two tournaments in September between years 5 and 6.  We entered the city wide schools knockout cup and the Southampton school’s football league.  Results have been up and down during the first half of the season.  Unfortunately we didn’t progress in the cup, but within the tournaments and league the boys (and Mia) have gained confidence and progressed as each week has passed.  Ready for a well-deserved winter break, fixtures resume in the early part of next year.

Anti-Bullying Week at Bitterne Manor - Power for Good!

At Bitterne Manor, we all took part in anti-bullying week! The theme this year is 'Power for Good' with the following key aims:

- To support children to use their Power for Good - by understanding the ways in which they are powerful and encouraging individual and collective action to stop bullying and to create the best world possible.

We started the week with an assembly. Each class shared their definitions for bullying and anti-bullying and ways in which we can use our head, heart and hands for the 'Power for Good!'

Each class explored the theme throughout the week and linked their Literacy work to it. Please take a look at our next Book Look, which is on Wednesday 30th November!

In Year R, we all took part in different role-plays and we discussed how we felt. We all agreed to use our Power for Good to always include and help each other!

Learning Leaders visit to the Mayour's Parlour

Our Learning Leaders had a brilliant visit this afternoon to the Mayor of Southampton's offices in the Civic Centre. We were hosted by Councillor Les Harris, the Sheriff of Southampton, who was sharing with us some of the city's collection of artefacts from all over the world. We also had a tour of the Mayoral chambers and the City Council meeting room. Thanks very much to the Sheriff and Mayor's office for their time showing us around and sharing their pride in our great city!

Our 'Learning Lab' is underway...

Yesterday construction started on our 'Learning Lab'! The children are so excited and can't wait for it to be completed and ready to use!

Year 5 and 6 Wake and Shake

This half term Year 5 and 6 children have been taking part in a daily 'Wake and Shake' scheme! Our 10 minute Shake Ups are a fun way to squeeze short, 10-minute bursts of activity into their day - it all adds up! There are loads of other benefits too, like improved behaviour and self-confidence, better attention levels and improved co-ordination  and social skills. The Wake and Shake club is open to all year 5 and 6 children. It runs on a Monday and Wednesday, 8.30am to 8.45am and most importantly, it's FREE! The morning club had been  a raging success so far, well done to all those children who have taken part!
Have a look below to see what they've been up to...

Year 5 gym week

Year 5 are having their gym week this week, learning how to do a variety of indivudual, then paired balances before putting them into a sequence to perform.  So far we have practised the disk and arch balances and the front and back supports. This afternoon we even challenged ourselves with the shoulder stand!  We have been working hard on improving our core strength as this helps us to achieve and hold each balance.
