Shelter building part 1!

In Kestrels we have been thinking about building shelters.  Which materials make a good shelter and how we can use our school grounds to help us.  Having organised ourselves into groups, explored the grounds and had an initial planning and designing session, today it was time to try out our ideas.  We tried making prototypes of our designs, swapping trees for glue sticks or water bottles, garden canes for art straws etc.  We had various degrees of success, but it's safe to say we all learnt something....from how to tie knots to what not to do!  In a couple of weeks time when we have evaluated and improved our designs, we will be building full scale versions....watch this space for the results!

Learning Leader Elections 2016

Bitterne Manor Primary became a polling station today for the annual election of our Lead Learners. Each class has voted for two pupils to represent them on our School Council as Lead Learners. Each year we borrow real ballot boxes from Southampton's electoral services department and carry out a proper ballot democratically. The two children receiving the highest numbers of votes in each class are then officially elected. We will announce the results later today to the children.

A surprise visitor...

Robins had a visit from Woody this week. He was supposed to be meeting Jessie and Buzz in town but he got caught in all the rain. Poor Woody was soaked! As a class we decided to help by making him his very own coat. Before we could get our sewing kits out we needed to find out what a raincoat needs. We thought about this really carefully and came up with lots of ideas, the most important being waterproof. After our discussion Miss cole found some different materials for us to investigate.  We used magnifying glasses and even a microscope to look really closely at the materials and made a prediction about what materials would make the best raincoat. Next week we are going to carry out a test so keep a look out for our results.

Jessie needs our help!

With all the rain today we had a very wet visitor in finches class this afternoon. Jessie had arrived. She was supposed to be meeting Woody and Buzz in town but she got caught in all the rain. She was soaked. We as a class decided to think about what she needed.  She didn't have a coat on. We thought about what would make a good coat for her and decided it should definitely be waterproof. Have a look at some of our ideas. We are next going to investigate some materials and make Jessie her very own waterproof coat.
