Kestrels explore evolution and adaptation

Kestrels have been learning about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution by natural selection. They have been finding out about Darwin's finches and how they have adapted, depending on the food sources available on the different islands of the Galapagos. To illustrate this, the children explored using different 'beaks' (cocktail sticks, tweezers and clothes pegs!) to pick up 'seeds' and 'insects'.

Kingfisher class have been down into the woods with Minibeasts!

Kingfisher class have had a fantastic week back and they have been enjoying their Minibeast topic.

They started the week with a minibeast hunt, looking for different kinds of insects. They made a tally chart to keep a count of the minibeasts they found. We then created a pictogram to show the information.

Even in PE they moved around the apparatus like minibeasts, crawling like caterpillars, buzzing around like bees and wriggling along the floor like worms.

This afternoon we made spider webs by threading wool through holes on paper plates.

We are looking forward to continuing our topic next week with more Minibeast activities, including using our new role play area.

Robin's Worm World!

 Worm World!

Robins had a busy day collecting worms to have in our very own worm world in our classroom! We had to put the feed and bedding into the jar and then it was the fun bit... WORM HUNTING!

Scientific Skylarks!

Skylarks are off to a flying start after the Easter break! We have already put our sensational science skills to the test by carrying out our own experiement!

This experiment was to help us learn all about ROCKS! The best part was... we used CHOCOLATE to help investigate and learn abll about this new topic!

I was so proud of all the children working so well together to carry out this chocolate filled experiment and everyone had the biggest smile on their face! Take a look below at some of the fun we had! ❤

Night Time Fear Study

Understanding the Origins of NightTime Fear in Childhood

Email: nightimestudy1@soton.ac.uk

Who is managing the study?

We are a group of researchers (David Keep, Dr Julie Hadwin and Professor Matt Garner)  from the School of Psychology, at the University of  Southampton

Who can take Part?

We are recruiting healthy male and female children between the ages 7 – 11 and their parent/caregiver to take part in a study that aims to understand why some children experience nighttime fears and  difficulties sleeping.

What does your participation involve?

You and your child/dependant will be asked to complete a survey that has 3 main sections.  The first section asks parents/ caregivers  to tell us about themselves.  The second section asks parents/ caregivers to tell us about their child/ dependent.  The third section is for your child/ dependent to complete about themselves.

Then your child will also be asked to complete a task on a computer. The task and the survey will be completed at home on your own computer.

What is the benefit of taking part?

Nighttime fears and poor sleep quality in children have shown to be associated with development of poor psychological well-being.  Understanding this phenomenon will inform the development of  tools to help both parents/ caregivers and children to manage nighttime fear.  To thank you for participating, you will be reimbursed a £5 amazon e-voucher for you and your child’s participation.

Thank you very much for your time.

A massive Happy Birthday to all of my Jazzy Jays

 Good Afternoon and happy holidays!

To celebrate the end of term, Jays had a birthday party to say a massive "happy birthday" to all of the children who have had to celebrate their birthdays in lockdown this year. We had a disco, played musical statues and even a game of pin the nose on Mr Adams!

Although this was not the term any of us expected, I am so proud of each and every single one of my Jays for their hard work and their amazing attitude to learning. Have the best Easter and I will see you in two weeks!

We're nearly there...

Please see the message below containing a link to some short YouTube videos starring young people, for young people to help with the public health messaging.

"In our work, we have heard from young people how much they have felt excluded from the conversation happening and how the messages around COVID-19 haven’t been targeted to them, so we have worked with young people to co-create a series of films for young people.

As the restrictions on our lives start to ease, and in the lead up to the Easter holidays, the need for us all to continue to do the right thing is the message behind this series of eight films. Each film reflects on the importance of us all continuing to look after each other, sticking to the rules, playing it safe, looking after our mental health and the impact of COVID on our lives. We want to help get these films out to a wider audience and particularly to spaces where young people will see them. Please help by sharing the videos which can all be found on this YouTube playlist    "
